Merthyr Tydfil, facing a high crime challenge, ranks 6th among 25 neighbouring districts for crime rates. The year 2023 recorded 7,297 incidents, leading to a crime rate of 124.02 incidents per 1,000 residents in its population of 58,839, marking a 15.34% increase over the previous year.
The most prevalent crimes in Merthyr Tydfil were Violence and sexual offences (34.3%), Anti-social behaviour (14.9%), and Shoplifting (13.2%), with the least common being Possession of weapons (0.5%), Robbery (0.4%), and Bicycle theft (0.2%).
Within its 11 wards, Town (Merthyr Tydfil) (187.0), Park (Merthyr Tydfil) (181.6), and Gurnos (176.5) witnessed the highest crime rates, while Vaynor (81.6), Treharris (79.1), and Bedlinog and Trelewis (76.2) were comparatively safer.
Postcode analysis reveals CF47 (155.4), CF48 (118.4), and CF44 (112.9) as high-crime areas, whereas CF46 (73.0) stands out as significantly safer.
In Merthyr Tydfil, there has been a significant increase in Anti-social behaviour by about 19.61% in 2020, along with rises in Other theft, Public order, and Shoplifting, which notably increased by 5.98% in 2023. Violence and sexual offences also saw a significant rise by around 6.52% in 2023. Conversely, there has been a decrease in Anti-social behaviour in 2021 and 2022, with significant drops each year. Burglary, Other theft, and Shoplifting also saw reductions in certain years, alongside a decrease in Vehicle crime in 2020.
