TREHARRIS Western have the oldest ground in the Welsh League. But the Division Three club, who have struggled to avoid relegation in recent seasons, hope that they will be able to complete plans eventually for a new ground.
The Athletic Ground is regularly on the visits list for groundhoppers because of its unique style. And they enjoy better gates than some clubs in the higher divisions of the league.
I called in on September 12 and saw them overcome South Wales Alliance side Llangynwyd Rangers. Bridgend, 2-0 in round two of the JD Sports Welsh Cup. Christopher Owen, formerly with Merthyr, Penydarren Boys’ Club and Ton Pentre, got a goal in each half. There must have been 80 plus spectators in the small stand which rises steeply from the pitch.
Treharris Western do a great job keeping football alive at the lower end of the borough with a nine-strong committee, including one female- Tasha Hollett. President is Mike Casey who, along with Treharris’ Peter Rees, is a life vice-president of the Welsh League.
Mike is a South Wales representative on the Welsh FA and Peter is a former president.
Owen rapped in four goals for Treharris in the previous round of the Welsh Cup with a 5-3 win over Cardiff Hibs.
Defender Tom Harris sustained an injury against Llangynwyd. He is the brother of Merthyr Town midfielder Matthew who, having been ruled out for the rest of the season through a knee injury, is to help with Treharris’ coaching.
Matthew, who has had some bad luck with injuries, suffered the latest setback in a pre-season friendly with Carmarthen Town.
Treharris picked up just three points from the first four games this term. They begin October with a trip to Newport Civil Service after matches at the end of September away to Ely Rangers and home to Lliswery.
